Just Making A Change for Families is a non-profit organization working to dismantle the family policing system while simultaneously investing in community support that keeps families together.

Who We Are

Our team

We are a team of impacted people, social workers, advocates, and organizers who are committed to the abolition of the family policing system.

MEET THE TEAM

What We Believe

The family policing system (or the so-called “child welfare system”) was not designed to protect children or support families. Instead of giving families what they need to thrive — such as stable housing, affordable child care, educational supports, and quality health care—this system investigates parents and tears children from their homes. Like the criminal legal system, the family policing system surveils, criminalizes, and punishes disproportionately Black, Latine, and low-income children and families.

What We Do

ADvocacy

We engage in advocacy to change laws and policies that threaten the rights, well-being, and autonomy of families. We also lead the Parent Legislative Action Network (PLAN), a statewide coalition of impacted parents and young people, advocates, attorneys, social workers, and academics collaborating to effect systemic change through legislative advocacy.

Storytelling

We are working to change the narrative around the so-called “child welfare system” by amplifying the experiences of people who have been directly harmed by family policing in social and traditional media.

Programs

We facilitate programs for parents and young people who have been impacted by the family policing system to heal, build community, and drive systemic change. Our programs create opportunities for peer support, political education, and activism.
